90210, the new incarnation of the famed 1990s teenage soap opera
Beverly Hills 90210, was honored on Saturday, April 11 as part of PaleyFest 2009. Cast and crew gathered at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills for an advance screening of an upcoming episode.

Afterwards, five cast members plus the executive producer participated in a panel discussion moderated by Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of
Juno, who also happens to be the show’s biggest fan. Here are some things revealed during the discussion:
1. Executive producer Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair, who recently took over the reigns of the show, said the original show spoke to the zeitgeist of the 1990s and hopes the new version, will do the same. She joked that when they do a third incarnation of the series, she hopes that people will be speculating about whether the characters from this second incarnation will come back for it, like they were about the original cast for this version.

2. Rob Estes (Harry Wilson), Lori Loughlin (Debbie Wilson), Shenae Grimes (Annie Wilson) and Tristan Wilds (Dixon Wilson) spent a day improving as the Wilson family prior to filming the first episode. They gathered at a theater and improved key family scenesy, including the adoption of Dixon and the discussion about moving from Kansas to Beverly Hills. That improv session helped them establish the family dynamics that are so important for the series. Estes called this the “Mike Leigh method,” after the British director famed for making his actors hone their characters before filming.
3. In reference to the storyline that made Silver bipolar, Kirshner Sinclair said that “bipolar kids are the epitome of all teenage kids. They have great highs and great lows.”
4. Jessica Stroup (Silver) has mixed emotions about the bipolar storyline. She was nervous about it since she has friends who are bipolar. But she was also excited about the story possibilities than can come from that development.
5. Since Silver is the only core character who was also a part of the original series, Stroup watched old episodes of the original series to get her backstory. But at the same time, she found it weird to see “herself” as a 5-year-old.
6. Rob Estes believes playing the parent is one of the hardest jobs on the series because as an actor, he wants good storylines, “but you also want the parents to be the moral foundation.”
7. In response to a question from Cody about why they included a teenage pregnancy storyline for the character of Adrianna, Stroup (Silver) joked, “We just wanted to recreate
Juno.”

8. On the number of woman that young teacher Ryan Matthews has already bedded, Ryan Eggold joked, “I actually put in my contract a quota of women I would sleep with.”
9. Eggold said that his favorite scene so far is one that ended up being cut out. It was an emotional scene between Ryan and Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth’s character).
10. Estes said his favorite scene so far hasn’t yet aired. He wouldn’t elaborate except to say that it is a scene that happens in the hospital.
11. Shenae Grimes said her favorite scene of the series so far was one for the first episode where the girls all go into the water at the beach at 4 a.m.

12. Matt Lanter, who joined the show as bad boy Liam in mid-season, said that his favorite scenes so far were the drag racing ones. However, he was disappointed, but also relieved that he didn’t actually drive the car for those scenes. It was done by a pull car.
13. When asked how this series compares to his high school experience, Lanter replied, “We were not nearly as cool in high school as these people.”
14. In response to the same question, Kirshner Sinclair said the situations may be different in the series but the emotions of being in high school are all the same.
15. On a question of dealing with success, Eggold advised to keep yourself grounded and not to let it go to your head. The cast then teased him the rest of the evening saying he was the one who had turned into an a-hole on the set.
16. The younger cast members often watch the show together. That helps them bond, but also lets them see what the others are doing since they’re not on the set watching when scenes they’re not in are being filmed.
17. In reference to the news that Dustin Milligan (Ethan) would not return for the show’s second season, executive producer Kirshner Sinclair said she admired Milligan greatly, calling him smart and perceptive. However, she said she was stumped by the character and didn’t see any longevity for Ethan.
18. Diablo Cody, who has a cameo as herself in an upcoming episode, said the set seemed to be one of the warmest she’d ever been on. As for her experience of acting, she said was scared and “I don’t want to do it ever again.”
